ABOUT THE SET

In Japan this is "Gold, Silver, to a New World..." — the opening salvo of the Neo era, released by Media Factory on February 4, 2000 alongside Pokemon Gold and Silver. It brought Generation II to the table and, with it, the first baby Pokemon (the Pichu holo) plus the new Darkness and Metal (Steel) types. Our checklist runs 96 cards, with Feraligatr, Typhlosion and Meganium among the Johto-starter holos and the Lugia chase card sitting at the top of the rarity slots. The set predates the English Wizards release, which followed later the same year, and the early cracked-ice foil reads warmer and softer than its WotC cousin. A genuine Japanese-first vintage run, distinct in date, publisher, and feel from the English Neo Genesis.

Vintage StapleThe most available Japanese Neo set; commons and uncommons are easy, but clean holos with intact cracked-ice foil and the baby-Pokemon Pichu carry real demand.

  • 1
We reference cards by Pokedex-based No. (e.g. No. 160 Feraligatr); the physical Japanese cards are numbered 1-96 within the set.
  • 2
First set to feature baby Pokemon (Pichu) and the new Darkness and Metal (Steel) types.
  • 3
A 2001 Media Factory reprint corrected several text/damage errata; original 2000 cards and the corrected reprint coexist.
GRADING NOTES

Holos use the early Neo cracked-ice foil, which scuffs and shows print lines easily, so surface is the usual grade-killer. Watch front-to-back roller lines and soft bottom-edge whitening. A 2001 Media Factory reprint corrected several errata, so confirm which printing you hold before reading any text-variant pricing.
