Known in Japan as Leaders' Stadium (ジム拡張第1弾 リーダーズスタジアム), this was Media Factory's first Gym expansion, hitting shelves October 24, 1998 as the fifth main Japanese Pokemon Card Game set. It builds the checklist around the Kanto gym leaders -- chiefly Brock, Misty, Lt. Surge and Erika -- so nearly every Pokemon carries a trainer's name. WotC adapted this single Japanese set into English Gym Heroes; the later English Gym Challenge came from a separate Japanese set, Challenge from the Darkness, so Leaders' Stadium maps to Gym Heroes, not both. It was the first Japanese release to ship with pre-constructed theme decks. Japanese cards from this era carry no 1st Edition stamp. Holos like Misty's Gyarados and Erika's Vileplume are the chase pulls collectors still hunt today.
- 1The set is unnumbered -- the number printed on each card is the Pokemon's National Pokedex number, not a set position.
- 2Japanese cards from this era carry no 1st Edition stamp, unlike WotC English Gym Heroes, which has a distinct 1st Edition printing.
Holo cards from this era are prone to surface scratches and edge whitening on the darker borders; check the holo foil and corners under raking light. Japanese-era centering is often more consistent than WotC English prints of the period.
