This is the catch-all English promo line Wizards of the Coast ran alongside the main sets, marked by the black star with PROMO where a set symbol would normally sit. Our catalog runs 53 numbered cards, the full Wizards count from July 1999 to March 2003 before they lost the license. There were no booster packs here — cards came one at a time through tournaments, League play, magazine inserts, retail tie-ins, and movie-ticket giveaways, which is why condition varies so wildly. Highlights include the very first promo, Pikachu #1, and the gold-stamped movie cards (Mewtwo, Pikachu, Dragonite, Electabuzz) handed out for Pokémon: The First Movie. With no 1st Edition or Shadowless variants to chase, value here lives in eye appeal and the iconic individual pieces rather than rarity stamps.
- 1Black star with PROMO sits where the set/rarity symbol would normally be — present on every card in the line.
- 2Four theatrical movie promos (Mewtwo #3, Pikachu #4, Dragonite #5, Electabuzz #2) carry a gold foil 'Kids' WB Presents Pokémon: The First Movie' stamp in the top-right of the art box; watch for stamp scratching and surface scuffs on the foil. Some copies erroneously have the stamp missing or rotated to the wrong corner.
- 3No 1st Edition or Shadowless variants — cards exist only in a single Unlimited-style printing.
No edition stamps exist, so grade on centering, surface, and corners alone. Many cards were handed out loose at events, in magazines, or with movie tickets, so handling wear and off-center cuts are common — clean copies grade up well. The four First Movie promos carry a gold foil stamp; watch for stamp scratching, surface scuffs on the foil, and the known misprints where the stamp is missing or in the wrong corner.
