Team Rocket is where the WotC English run got dark — literally. Released April 24, 2000, it localized the Japanese Rocket set and gave collectors the first Dark Pokemon: villainous, scuffed-up versions of the icons, headlined by Dark Charizard, Dark Blastoise, and Dark Dugtrio. It's also the set that introduced the secret card to English Pokemon — Dark Raichu sits at 83/82, the chase pull nobody saw coming. Eighty-three cards in all, printed in First Edition and Unlimited, on the Cosmos holofoil that handlers will recognize instantly. The Rocket 'R' set symbol tells you what you're holding at a glance. A favorite among run collectors: nostalgic, a little mischievous, and home to one of the hobby's most beloved secret rares.
- 1First set in English Pokemon to include a secret card: Dark Raichu, numbered 83/82.
- 2Introduced 'Dark Pokemon' — corrupted versions of familiar Pokemon themed to Team Rocket.
- 3Holos use the Cosmos holofoil pattern (introduced with Base Set 2), not a distinct 'Galaxy' foil.
- 4Identifiable by the Team Rocket 'R' set symbol near the art.
First Edition carries the black WotC '1' (Edition 1) stamp to the left of the art window. Holos use the Cosmos holofoil pattern (the same vibrant, circle-filled 'galaxy-look' foil introduced with Base Set 2), which scuffs and shows whitening on edges easily — clean holos grade well. Centering is generally tighter than Base, but check the back border bleed.
