Investing in PokemonPokémon Cards

Top 6 Most Profitable 1999 Pokemon Boosters

By October 1, 2016 No Comments

So basically this article is going give you a top 6 list of Pokemon card items and give you the price they once were in 1999 and compare them to the price they are now. To make things interesting I am going to pretend that you invested $10,000 in the item back in 1999. Not many every day human beings would have invested $10,000 in Pokemon Cards back in 1999. But after this article you are going to be kicking yourself after you see how much you could have made. I chose 10k because it is a nice round number. Think of people investing in stocks I would say 10k is an average amount? Majority of the time you’ll be lucky to get your money back with stocks. Pokemon cards on the other hand, you would walk away with a very tidy profit. Especially if you held onto your investment for the last 17 years. Which I know is especially hard with things like booster packs, because you want that feeling you once had when you were a kid, ripping open that booster pack and searching for that rare holographic card 3 cards from the back.

I have been busy writing another eBook that is up on Amazon now, that’s called “Pokemon Card Prices: Base Set Graphs & Inflation”. It’s currently for sale for $0.99 so go and have a look at it if you haven’t already. Basically, I had a price list of every card from the set from 2015 and I have compared it to the current 2016 price list. Obviously 2016 was a big year with Pokemon with the 20 year anniversary and of course Pokemon Go. So there is quite a large increase on the Pokemon Card prices this year. Below is a little snippet from my book comparing the 2015 and 2016 average price of only the Base Set holographic cards. Prices are in USD.

2015 vs 2016 ‘Average’ Percent Increase Base Set Holos

# NAME 2015 2016 %
1 ☆H Alakazam $11 $13 18%
2 ☆H Blastoise $25 $30 20%
3 ☆H Chansey $9 $9 0%
4 ☆H Charizard $35 $55 57%
5 ☆H Clefairy $6 $11 83%
6 ☆H Gyarados $5 $10 100%
7 ☆H Hitmonchan $5 $8 60%
8 ☆H Machamp $6 $9 50%
9 ☆H Magneton $7 $10 43%
10 ☆H Mewtwo $8 $13 63%
11 ☆H Nidoking $9 $13 44%
12 ☆H Ninetales $5 $6 20%
13 ☆H Poliwrath $6 $9 50%
14 ☆H Raichu $9 $14 56%
15 ☆H Venusaur $15 $20 33%
16 ☆H Zapdos $10 $13 30%

As you can see there is quite an increase just in the last year. Now to move onto something even more interesting. Investing $10,000 in Pokemon Card Booster Packs in 1999. How much would you’re $10,000 be worth now? Okay let’s start from the lowest return on your investment and work our way up to the most profitable investment. Don’t skip to the bottom for the juicy No. 1 and be a party pooper!

The price of the 1st Edition Base Set Booster Box is always increasing and understanding the meaning of life is easier than finding one these days. If one was to go up for auction today who knows what it may fetch. A PSA 10 1st Edition Base Charizard (which can be found in any one of those 36 packs inside the box) can fetch between 9-12k alone. As you have seen in my Top 10 Most Expensive Pokemon Card Sales. Now back to these price increases, if somebody can make me a time machine so I can go back and buy as many Old School Boosters as possible that would be great. I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t mind being a millionaire.
